Surfer Necklaces – Finding the Best Surf Styles
In choosing a surf necklace it helps to think like a surfer. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an ardent surfer or someone who lives a thousand miles from the nearest ocean. If you like that surf style, you’ll find it by first getting into a surfer mindset-one where the good things in life are the simple things, and where nature and the environment are paramount.
Once your simple and natural surfer mindset is in place, consider your options based on these four features of surf necklaces:
1. Water-Wearable
Even if you have no intention of surfing, your necklace should be ready and able to hit the waves. That means, first and foremost, that you don’t want anything too heavy or chunky that would weigh you down in the water or dig into your chest when you’re paddling on your board. Nor do you want anything that’s going to react badly to water by rusting or bleeding color. You need something that can stand up to a pretty good beating (the ocean can be mighty rough at times). Finally, you certainly don’t want anything fine or expensive that you’d have to take off your body before running into the ocean.
2. Natural Materials
Again, surfing and nature go hand in hand, so a surf style necklace usually features natural materials. The most basic and possibly the most common material is leather cord, but surfers also tend to favor styles that incorporate hemp, wood beads, bone beads or rope. And for unmistakable surfer style, you can find necklaces made of shells-the most prevalent being puka shell or cowry shell.
3. A Single Pendant
While it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a plain leather cord, many surfers opt for something with a pendant. In keeping with the “simple things” mindset, it’s usually a single pendant-a celtic coin, a cross, a peace sign, a yin-yang symbol, or basically anything cool. Especially cool are pendants that are linked to the ocean somehow, such as surfboard pendants or a colorful piece of sea glass. But the King of All Surf Pendants is the shark’s tooth. You just can’t get more “surf” than a shark tooth on a leather, hemp or shell necklace.
4. The Right Length
Most of the items you find when searching for surfer necklaces are better referred to as chokers. They’re typically around 18″ in length, falling just below the throat so that they, and any pendant attached, are visible when wearing an open-collar (think Hawaiian shirt). But length is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are no hard rules against longer necklaces among the very accepting inhabitants of Surfer World. In fact, plenty of surf style necklaces are available in longer lengths, from 30″ ball chain necklaces to 42″ thin rubber cords, and even leather cord “sliders” that allow to you adjust the length anywhere from 15″ to 21″.
